Woodland Learning - Learning Beyond the Classroom

At our school, we believe that some of the most powerful learning happens outside the classroom. Our outdoor woodland learning environment provides every child with regular opportunities to explore, discover, create and learn in a natural environment. It also offers additional bespoke learning for those children needing something personalised.

Woodland learning is much more than outdoor play. It is a carefully planned approach that supports children's academic, social, emotional and physical development while fostering a lifelong connection with the natural world.

Why Woodland Learning Matters

Today's children are growing up in an increasingly busy and technology-driven world. Time spent outdoors provides valuable opportunities to slow down, observe, investigate and connect with nature.

Research consistently shows that outdoor learning can improve children's wellbeing, concentration, motivation and engagement in learning. Woodland Learning supports children to become more confident learners while also promoting positive mental health and physical activity.

Through regular experiences in our woodland environment, children learn to persevere, adapt to challenges and develop important life skills that will benefit them far beyond their primary school years.

What Children Learn

Woodland Learning supports many aspects of the curriculum and enables children to apply their learning in meaningful ways. Each class spends time in the woodland area with their class teacher and Woodland leader. The learning is carefully crafted to support their wider curriculum and is bespoke to each cohort.

Children may:

Explore habitats, plants and wildlife.
Develop scientific enquiry and observation skills.
Create artwork inspired by the natural environment.
Use natural materials for construction and design challenges.
Develop mathematical thinking through practical investigations.
Build vocabulary, storytelling and communication skills.
Learn about sustainability, conservation and caring for the environment.
Participate in team-building activities that strengthen friendships and cooperation.

Developing the Whole Child

One of the greatest strengths of Woodland Learning is its ability to nurture the whole child. Some children attend the woodland learning area regularly for carefully designed packes of learning. These are individual and designed by the Inclusion Manager, Woodland Learing lead and the class teacher.

Children learn to:

Take responsibility for themselves and others.
Manage risk safely and sensibly.
Develop perseverance when tasks become challenging.
Build self-esteem through achievement and exploration.
Show kindness, empathy and respect within a shared environment.

Every child can succeed in the woodland, often in ways that may not be seen in a traditional classroom setting.
