Year 1s have been reading Tell Me a Dragon by Jackie Morris as our final text this year. We have been so inspired by the illustrations in the book that we have created and painted our own dragon illustrations today. On Monday we will write poems about our dragons on these “book pages” and present them to the class.
Year 1s learned and applied new skills today in joining textiles. They explored gluing, stapling, safety pinning and finally sewing together pieces of fabric. They designed their puppet characters from the Gingerbread Man and threaded their needles to do basic stitching. Some found it very tricky to persevere with the sewing and we were impressed with their resilience and willingness to try new things. Superb effort Year 1s!
At their Forest School session this afternoon the Year 1s enjoyed a campfire! First they hunted down appropriate sticks to prepare for marshmallow roasting. Then after a couple of listening games the fire were lit and the marshmallow roasting began. The children showed great listening skills and fire safety and had a really lovely time.
Year 1s began their new topic this week – Animals including Humans. They had lots of interesting facts to share! They worked in groups to decide if some animals were fish or mammals. Then we learned about what makes humans mammals.
Year 1s were Challenge Chasers on Friday afternoon at Forest School where they had to move swiftly and skilfully through a tricky obstacle course. Year 1s were described as “resilient” by all of the adults on Friday as they showed enormous determination to complete their tasks and “never give up”. Year 1s were also amazing Team Builders as they cheered for each one of their peers as they completed the obstacle course.
Year 1s designed moving picture books today using sliders. They first explored sliders that moved horizontally and vertically and then planned which ones to use in the three scenes of their story. The children worked independently in cutting, sticking and finally tying together their storybooks.
Year 1s were introduced to compass points this week! Next week we will continue to build upon their understanding of compass points as we map sightseeing journeys of London. Year 1s continue to practise forming their letters the same size and some of us are now joining up our letters.
Year 1s were so excited to learn about fruits and vegetables in DT today. They were surprised to learn that many foods commonly called vegetables are indeed fruits! We learned what the difference is between vegetables and fruits and where they grow (above ground, below the ground or on vines or trees). The children showed their sense of adventure in trying brand new foods – kiwis, butternut squash, mango, avocado and mint. We practised good hygiene and safe handling when preparing the fruits for our smoothies. We made three varieties of smoothies – Butternut Boost, Kiwi Crusher and Tropical Tango. Tropical Tango was the most popular smoothie in Year 1 containing pineapple, mango and orange juice.
In our Seasonal Changes topic we have been looking at changes in weather and how to protect ourselves from different types of weather. Year 1s had some great ideas of how to protect ourselves with different clothing as well as making different choices such as staying inside or drinking more water to stay hydrated in the heat.
