Today Year 1s designed and constructed a windmill for a mouse. We began by talking about where we have seen windmills and learning about their three main parts and how they work. Then the children decorated their nets, taking care to include a door and windows for the mouse. After they had decorated their nets, they cut along the solid lines and folded along the dotted lines to create a stable structure. This was a tricky step and the children did really well to focus and help one another. Finally, the children poked holes in their turbine nets and attached the pipe cleaner axles and fitted it to their structure to complete their windmills. The children loved testing out their windmills and could reflect upon what went well and what didn’t go so well.
